The Dolls Orchid

The dolls orchid (Orchis anthropophora, synonym: Aceras anthropophorum) is an orchid. The species is on the Dutch Red List of plants as very rare and moderately decreased. The plant is legally protected and is in the Netherlands in South Limburg and Zeeland. The plant is found in Europe. DNA Research has shown that the dolls to the orchid genus Orchis be counted and not to the genus Aceras. The chromosome number is 2n = 42.

The plant is 10 to 40 cm high. The plant has 4-9 leaves and shiny oblong to lanceolate. At the base of the plant species they form a rosette and later on they stem comprehensive. The new leaves are formed in the fall suggesting the origin of the Mediterranean. The plant is relatively small, round to ovoid tubers.

Doll Orchid blooms in May and June with light green flowers with brown edge. Inflorescence a rich floral with up to 100 flowers, cylindrical spike. The flowers are 12-14 mm.

The fine seed germinates and food does not contain a reserve only if a root fungus (mycorrhiza) it penetrates.

The doll orchid occurs in moderately dry grasslands on calcareous soil. The flowers are pollinated by flies and beetles. The lack of a track to the flower, the beetles come to the nectar.
