Bell Rapunzel of Bellflower

Bell also called Rapunzel Rapunzel (Campanula rapunculus) is a plant of the bellflower family (Campanulaceae). It grows on calcareous sandy soil, especially along major rivers. This plant is legally protected in the Netherlands and is on the red list.


The 30-50 cm tall plant has an angular and slightly hairy stem. The root is fleshy. The rosette leaves are ovate and toothed short. The clear bell-shaped flowers are 2-3 cm long, pedunculate. The bowl-shaped punch line to his lips. The flower color is light purple or occasionally white. At the base of the stem seem to grow two bracts.


Rapunzel The bell has been known since the Middle Ages a salad vegetable. Root and leaf vegetables are to eat raw in salads. The taste of the root resembles radish, but sweet and remarkably smooth. The foliage is fine and neutral flavor.


In the Middle Ages people took the vegetables from the field often. Doctors also used the fruit for medicinal purposes. From there it was rampion clock suitable for incorporation into a medicinal berm salad.

Note: the field bell (Campanula rapunculoides) is very similar to this plant.
