The Caraway Elie Blooms

Caraway Elie (Selinum carvifolia) is a biennial plant that belongs to the floral display family (Apiaceae or Umbelliferae). The aroma of the plant is consistent with parsley. The plant resembles caraway. It is a plant of wet, moderately rich soil in deciduous forests and grasslands. The plant is native to Eurasia and was introduced in North America. She is on the Dutch Red List of plants as very rare and greatly reduced. Also, the plant in the ornamental use.


The plant is 30-90 cm high and has an angular and winged stems. The lower and upper leaves are threefold bipinnate.


Caraway Elie blooms in July and August. The flowering displays consist of three p.m. to eight p.m. rays with many carpels. The omwindselbladen usually missing. The flowers are initially pink and later fade to white.


The fruit is a two-part split fruit. The fruits are 3-4 mm long seen around on the back. The back part of the fruits strongly flattened. The middle part of the fruit ribs are narrow and the broad lateral wings.

Caraway Elie is a host for the black spot Pug (Eupithecia centaureata) and leaf miner Phytomyza mylini.
